AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) -- Maine Republicans are launching what's expected to be a continued push against Democratic legislative candidates this campaign season for their opposition to measures overhauling the state's welfare programs.
A new website the GOP announced on Wednesday slams several incumbent Democratic candidates for their votes last session on proposals including limiting where welfare benefits may be used. The website claims they "support welfare abuse."
Republicans are looking to regain majorities in both the House and Senate in November and say overhauling welfare will be one of the key campaign issues.
Democratic Party Chairman Ben Grant said Republicans are distorting the truth. He says Democrats agreed that welfare fraud and abuse shouldn't be tolerated and sought to work with the GOP on these issues last session.
