PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- The Portland firefighter who died of a heart attack Monday has been laid to rest.
Captain Michael Kucsma was 43-years-old when he suffered a heart attack while scuba diving on Monday. He had responded to an emergency call with Gorham firefighters, just before his dive.
Saturday morning, the funeral for Capt. Michael Kucsma was held at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Portland.
The procession marched down Cumberland Ave. toward the Cathedral, where firefighters from near and far stood on the street to honor him.
Engine 6, the engine he had commanded, carried his casket toward the church.
During the funeral, firefighters shared stories of Kucsma serving Portland and Gorham fire departments for more than 20 years. His wife Marcia Kucsma also spoke at the funeral about her husband who wanted to make the world a better place for others.
In lieu of flowers the family requested donations be made in Kucsma's memory to the Portland Firefighters Children's Burn Foundation.
